If you need more help with Key #3, Adapting to Change…
Given that change is an inevitable part of life, it makes sense that all of us figure out how to increase our capacity to rebound or spring back from change and loss, a concept now called resiliency by social science researchers. Although some aspects of resiliency are inborn, it also makes sense to teach and model whatever parts of resiliency we can in order to better prepare our children for what lies ahead. One of the pioneers in this field is psychologist Robert Brooks who, in addition to writing scores of books and articles on the subject, co-founded with Sam Goldstein the Raising Resilient Children Foundation, dedicated to this important mission on a global scale.
Because the psychotherapists at the Family Therapy Institute had been recommending his book, Raising Resilient Children for a number of years, we decided to invite Robert Brooks to come to Santa Barbara to offer a training on this topic. Not only did he inspire our audience with his moving stories of resiliency, we found in this bright, optimistic, humorous man someone who walked the walk. If you are not yet a parent, we recommend The Power of Resilience which helps identify whatever negative scripts may be getting in the way of your becoming more stress hardy.
