“The cure for anything is salt water – sweat, tears, or the sea.” -Isak Dinesen
Although Isak Dinesen was not a psychologist, her words of advice ring as true today as 100 years ago when they were first written. Not to insult the erudite or the English majors reading this blog, but to remind ourselves, Dinesen is the Danish writer most well known for Out of Africa and Babette’s Feast since both were made into delicious movies. Dinesen goes on to explain that “Difficult times have helped me to understand better than before, how infinitely rich and beautiful life is in every way….” Her words are the mark of a resilient individual, finding a way to positively reframe painful experiences as adding richness to the tapestry of life. Our experience, both personally and as psychotherapists, have borne out the truth that expression of feelings can allow healing to begin and the grief process to continue to move forward. What I love about this quote is that it shows how intuitively we have always known what helps us heal. Now we have research to show how sweat (think aerobic exercise) reduces anxiety and depression, tears (think letting go) facilitate healing, and the sea (think salt) helps sore throats, aching muscles, and much more. So…if you need to let go of big feelings, go jump in the ocean, swim as hard a you can, and scream into the water!

Anyway, should you have any ideas or techniques for new blog owners, please share. I understand this is off subject however I simply wanted to ask. Thank you!
