Marriage is Good For Your Health

A new study from the University of Rochester was just released that shows the benefits of happy marriages for the health of both men and women. This study is relevant because it sheds new light on past studies that have shown that married men live longer but that marriage did not benefit women in the same way. It turns out that while just being married (vs. being single) confers better health and longer life to men, women are a bit more particular. The Rochester researchers asked participants about the quality of the marriage and found that “women need to feel satisfied in their relationships to reap a health dividend”. Tracking 225 people who had coronary bypass surgery, they found 83% of happily wedded wives were still alive fifteen years later compared to 28% of unhappy wives and 27% of unmarried women. Happily married  men also had an 83% survival rate but 60% of those not happily married still survived compared to 36% of unmarried men. The study adjusted for age, depression, tobacco use and other factors that would affect survival rates.

The letters we write to each other at Christmas are important keepsakes in our family too. Thanks for your support and feedback. Debra

  4. I especially like your last paragraph – and I did start a blog – two in fact – just a few months ago! I always write letters to my children at Christmas – sometimes more often, but at least once a year. They know their letters will be in their stockings! Probably wouldn’t do anything you said not to – just a little bit inhibited! But that’s just me. Congratulations on being freshly pressed!
