Creating Healthy Habits

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not a single act, but a habit.”   -Aristotle

I chose this quote to ponder because I want to spend some time thinking about what I repeatedly do and hope you will too. I suggest generating a list for a few days of repeated behaviors and, if you are really brave, ask your partner or kid or parent to keep a list for you. Are you repeatedly yelling, interrupting, or watching TV? Or are you getting fresh air and exercise daily, going to bed on time, and kissing your loved ones goodbye? Far too many people come to couples or family therapy, imagining that they will have to analyze their childhoods, and are pleasantly surprised that we tell them they are merely going to have to change their habits.  A few days or weeks later, they realize just how difficult changing habits can be and discussing difficult childhoods suddenly sounds really easy.  Whatever we repeat, we strengthen. Whether for the good of our family or not. Now that’s something to think about…
