Dealing with emotions- our own and those of our kids and partners- can be one of the more painful, frustrating, and ultimately fulfilling parts of being in a family. After the groundbreaking classic bestseller, Emotional Intelligence, by Daniel Goleman came out in 1995, the world came to the shocking realization that having a high IQ did not necessarily lead to success in life or in relationships. A slew of books and resources and training programs have followed, bringing important information about how to foster greater emotional intelligence or EQ. Psychologist John Gottman specifically applied these ideas in a practical format for parents with his book, Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child: the Heart of Parenting. Particularly helpful is the five-step “emotion coaching” process whereby parents can teach children how to recognize, name and problem-solve around their emotions. The book also helps the parent quickly identify his or her particular style of emotional parenting and learn about more effective methods of raising the child’s EQ.
